One of the Largest Castles in the Mediterranean
Mytilene Castle rises impressively above the city, in a strategic position that controls the harbor and the passage toward the Asia Minor coast. It is one of the most important and best-preserved castles of the Eastern Mediterranean, a symbol of the enduring significance of Mytilene as a commercial and defensive center.
Its original fortification dates back to the Byzantine period (6th century AD), built upon even older foundations. The successive presence of different powers and civilizations strengthened and shaped the castle as we know it today, transforming it into a monument with multiple historical layers.
Over the centuries, the castle was reinforced and expanded by:
- the Byzantines
- the Genoese (Gattilusi family)
- the Ottomans
Each era left its own mark on its architecture: bastions, gates, cisterns, underground passages, and sections of fortifications that reach the sea.
Its area exceeds 60 stremmas, ranking it among the largest castles in the Mediterranean.
During your visit, you will discover:
- The medieval gate and the coats of arms of the Gattilusi
- Ottoman baths
- Old water cisterns
- Panoramic views of the Aegean and the Asia Minor coastline
The visit lasts approximately 1-1.5 hours and is an ideal combination with a walk through the historic city center.
There is the possibility of a private guided tour with a professional guide upon arrangement.
