A Geological Treasure of International Significance

Lesvos is not simply a beautiful island. It is a living geological museum. Recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark, it is a member of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network and stands out for its unique geological history.

Approximately 20 million years ago, powerful volcanic eruptions shaped the landscape we see today. The result is an island with impressive geological formations, volcanic fields and natural monuments of international importance.

The Petrified Forest of Lesvos

One of the Largest and Best Preserved in the World

The Petrified Forest of Lesvos is among the most important worldwide. Entire tree trunks, roots, and plant imprints were preserved in excellent condition when volcanic ash covered the tropical forest of the time, "freezing" time.

Today, visitors can see giant petrified trunks in their natural position, multicolored mineral fossils, and geological formations of unique aesthetic value that create an almost otherworldly landscape.
